William Miller and the Advent Crisis
The story of the rise of the advent movement is one of the most romantic and interesting episodes in American history. It occurred in the booming forties a period when the nation was expanding filled with that energy which was to carry the bounds of our nations over the lofty Rockies and on to the Pacific.
Amidst the frontier optimism of the time there arose a spiritual optimism a looking for heavenly prosperity. As the land speculator and pioneer staked out new cities on the unbroken prairie so the religious reformers ?looked for a city which hath foundations whose builder and maker is God.? While the world sought gain these believers turned aside from the gainful pursuits of life to prepare for the end of all things.
