'I have chosen a category of scandals that concern God?s silence in the face of evil with all its atrocities. It is God?s apparent and disturbing inaction that has been most puzzling to me as it has to many others.
'Some of the scandals which I have chosen to focus on may not be readily perceived as such by readers used to the drama of theatres tabloids or television. One must remember however that what is perceived as a scandal may at times vary from age to age and from country to country. . . . For this and other reasons the scandalous element in some of the biblical stories I have selected is more subtle. . . '
